Ethnic minority rights in Rakhine reviewed
Sittway, April 7

A workshop on the rights and freedoms of ethnic minorities in Rakhine State was held yesterday at Thazin Hall in Sittway Town, Rakhine State. Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of the Office of the State Counsellor, U Khin Maung Tin, Vice Chairman of the Committee for Implementation of the Recommendations on Rakhine State, said the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State suggested that authorities review regional orders and instructions on the rights of ethnic minorities in accordance with the law.

He urged representatives of the Mro, Khami, Daing Net, Chakkama, Chin, Maramargyi and Kaman ethnic minorities to give suggestions in the workshop’s group discussions. He also stressed the need for rights and freedom to be in conformity with the law, as stability plays an important role in development Rakhine State. He also suggested a review of the rights and freedoms of the ethnic minorities from the points of security and the rule of law to be able to establish a road map for their rights.

At the workshop, the officials discussed the regional orders, rules, rights of ethnic minorities and citizenship rights. Representatives of the ethnic minorities participated in group discussions and presented the common agreement on their rights.

IDP camps closed; resettlement underway in Rakhine
Sittway, April 8

Two deputy ministers visited Nidin Village’s internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, on 5 April, where they explained the resettlement programmes and the plan to close the IDP camp.

During their meeting with those in-charge and residents of the camp, Deputy Minister of the State Counsellor’s Office U Khin Maung Tin and Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Soe Aung elaborated on the teacher reinforcement plan in the schools, higher learning pursuance plans for students who passed the matriculation examination, the station hospital extension plan at Khaungtok Village in Kyauktaw Township, vocational education plans and the national verification card issuance plan at the camp.

The plan to close the camp is underway, and Director of Implementation Committee on Recommendations on Rakhine State Dr Aung Thurein met with those in-charge and residents of Khaung Dokka camps 1 and 2 in Sittway Township the next day and discussed closure plans.

The committee, while prioritising the camp closure plan, is working to close the Thekebyin camp in Sittway, Taungpaw camp in Myebon and Nidin camp in Kyauktaw.
